U13 girls attended the inaugural John Maguire Tournament last Sunday morning.
17 girls togged for the competition in Cooley to compete against 23 other teams from near and far.
The day started with a parade of teams before we played our first round robin game against strong Dublin opposition. After making a bright start and taking an early lead we conceded a couple of goals against the run of play and were unable to catch up playing into the wind in the second half.
The second match was against Kildress of Tyrone, the eventual cup winners. Up against it from the start, the girls tried their best to the end but to no avail.
For the quarter final the Gers were drawn against French opposition. The girls raced into a healthy lead and never looked back.
In the semi final the girls played St Brigids of Belfast. The Gers went point for point with their opponents until a goal early in the second half put the Brigids in control. The girls fought back bravely hitting the post twice in the last few minutes, losing by 2 at the final whistle.
Well done to all the girls who played on the day who were lead by Anna as captain on the day.
