Mighty battle in the Mochtas
Gers 14 boys playing in Division 3 of the U15 league produced a commited, battling performance on Wednesday night against a talented St Mochtas side in Louth Village.
Noah Lauaki and Aswanth Sivaraman showed their versatility and team ethic by doing a half each in goals and a half each in the forward line, both doing very well. The hosts got out of the traps early and with the wind at their backs held a 1-3 to no score lead mid way through the first half. Thankfully we were defending well as a team helped by the tight marking and bravery of Ronan Traynor and Sean Costigan which kept us in the game and gradually we began making incisions into their defence helped by Jack Greene’s surging runs from centre back. Some fine build up play particularly by Finn Madine saw us reply with 1-2 before half time; a Conor Whitmarsh free which he won himself, a super point by Aodhan Gibbons and a well taken goal by Odhran McShane helped by great movement by Eoghan Traynor and Conall
Bowden to cut open the Mochtas defence and leave just the minimum between the teams at the half time whistle.
With the wind at our backs we dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half but couldn’t just turn our superiority into scores. Then on a sporadic Mochtas attack they managed to get a goal. The game became disjointed at this stage with both defences on top and scores hard to come by. A further point from a Mochtas free meant the gap was out to 5 points but the Gers never gave up and were rewarded when, following good work by Thomas Quinn-Stuttard, Odhran McShane sent a 45 straight to the net. St Mochtas replied with a point before Maciek Dobros scored an impressive point to leave only 2 in it. The Gers threw everything at St Mochtas in the remaining minutes with Owen McGahon powering through the middle repeatedly and eventually in the first minute of injury time Noah Lauaki grabbed a goal to leave us 1 point ahead. 5 further minutes elapsed but the Gers defended heroically and Mal Madine and Eoghan Sweeney won some vital kickouts to see out the game with a final score of Geraldines 3-3
St Mochtas 2-5
Well done Gers and thanks to St. Mochtas for hosting.
