The Minor Boys began their League Division 1 campaign against the Newtown Blues in Drogheda on Monday evening. It turned out to be a very entertaining game with plenty of scores, high catching, blocking, hard hitting and even a couple of cards!
Having won the toss, the boys opted to play with the strong wind in the first half. This decision helped generate some early attacks which unfortunately we weren’t able to complete, and it was the Blues who opened the scoring. We responded with a point from Francis Lynch to get the Gers going.
The teams then traded points until the Blues struck their first goal in the 11th minute opening a gap between the teams. Points from play from Cormac Broe & Jamie Soraghan and two converted frees from Tom Cunniffe brought the Gers back into the game. The Gers raised their first green flag on 29 minutes with Francis Lynch finding the net, but this was cancelled out almost immediately by a second Blues goal. Another converted free and a score from play from Thomas McNamara brought the first half to a close with the Gers trailing by 2 points, 2-6 to 1-7.
Playing against with wind in the second half, the Gers had a purple patch scoring a goal from Eoin McDonnell and another pointed free to momentarily go in front by a one. The Blues came back into the game with a number of points and a goal carved through the Gers defence to build up a lead which would not be overhauled. The Gers however did not give up with Eoin McDonnell securing his brace followed by points from Eoin Kenny, Thomas McNamara and Jamie Soraghan.
Unfortunately, a couple of late goals from the Blues put too much of a gap between the teams and we were unable to claw this one back in time.
In what was a typical tough encounter against the Drogheda boys the lads didn’t give up and showed a tremendous amount of fight and determination. There’s plenty of determination and football ability in this group and we look forward to the next game against Naomh Martin on May 27th.
Final score was 6-12 to 3-13.
