Geraldines U-15 Girls The 2022 Louth Féile Champions.
Congratulations to the Geraldines u-15 girls who overcame a very strong Cooley outfit in extra time to win Louth’s Division 1 Féile title in atrocious conditions in Darver this afternoon.
During the round robin matches the girls faced Cooley, Kilkerley and finally Hunterstown in a competitive group. Cooley were up first. As in previous encounters there was nothing between the teams but a late point from a free kick tipped the balance in our favour.
Kilkerley provided the opposition in the second game. Once again the game was tight but a brace of goals late in the first half left the girls in control. At this stage all the girls had played some part. And so we went into the final game against Hunterstown, ensuring every girl not only played a half but got to start a match. This was possibly our best performance as the girls clicked into gear and hit the net with regularity throughout.
And so to the final. And what a contest it was.
Just before the throw in, the wind bared its teeth. 🥶. The girls played into the breeze in the first half. They got off to a great start slotting home a goal in the first minute. That was to be the highlight of the half as Cooley dominated all over the pitch. They scored 2-4 without reply as our girls struggled to maintain possession. No doubt Cooley were in the ascendancy and deserved their 7 point lead.
But this is a team to be reckoned with. The girls showed great strength of character and inner belief to stage a dramatic comeback. The Gers scored a great point and netted after a great passing move but almost immediately Cooley replied with a cracking goal of their own. But this is where the girls came into their own. In the remaining minutes they mustered the courage and skill to score another 1-3 to tie the game.
And so to extra time, which the Gers girls dominated. They kept Cooley scoreless and scored 2 points in each half to win the game. Well done to our old foes Cooley who played their part in a sporting and absorbing contest.
Hopefully Croke Park will be the venue for the All Ireland competition. 🤞🤞🤞Well done girls
