The U16s 5th championship match took place on Wednesday night with an away fixture against the Kevin’s. With rain falling for most of the day the conditions weren’t the best, and the addition of a strong downfield breeze another element to contend with. The Gers would win the toss and play with the breeze for the first half. The girls started strongly, enjoying plenty of possession and brought the game to the Kevin’s. The Kevin’s would show what a dangerous team they were, happy to absorb the pressure then attack on the break with speed. The Gers would hit the back of the net 3 times in the opening half and put 4 over the bar, but really should have had much more had they been more accurate in front of goal. The Kevin’s kept themselves well in the game scoring 1-05. Half time score was 3-04 to 1-05. The second half was always going to be a backs to the wall effort from the Gers girls, with the Kevin’s having the benefit of the strong breeze behind them. It was the Gers who were quickest out of the blocks and they should have had 2 scores within 5 minutes of the restart. The Kevin’s started to see much more of the ball but were finding it very difficult to break the line of a seriously hardworking Gers outfit who were happy to do some hard running and tackling, and put their bodies on the line. Their opponents were slowly closing the gap with a couple of scores from play and from close in frees and would draw level with a few minutes of the game to go. However the response was resolute, and the Gers girls dug deep and refused to buckle under the pressure, redoubling their efforts and working the ball out of defence through the hands and carrying the ball out of danger into the opposition half. Indeed it was the Gers who finished stronger scoring 1-01 in the final 5 minutes to run out deserving winners to record their 3rd win from 5 in a very tough and tense match. Final score 4-05 to 1-10. Well done to all who were there on the night, from the girls on the pitch, and the great encouragement and support form the girls on the line to the parents who came along to support. It was a performance full of grit and determination which was evident in all from No. 1 to 25. Scorers were Méabh Fee 2-01, Karina Corcoran 1-00, Rachel Lynch 1-00, Anya Rodgers 0-02, Emma Whately 0-01 and Sophie Woulfe 0-01. Next up is a home match on Wednesday night against the Martins.
